A FEMINIST CALENDAR FOR 2018
HELP US SPREAD THE WORD
Unapologetic is a calendar for 2018. A feminist one. It also functions as a set of 13, A3 size posters. As an object is inspired by the practice of See Red Women’s Workshop, an artist collective founded in 1974, dedicated to changing the image of women in the media and advertising and to silk screening posters for the Women’s Lib. Upon seeing their impressive collection, a spark ignited. We took these same tools to raise our voice on gender equality.
WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS
In her Tedx Talk and book We should all be feminists, the Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie tells us the story of a woman. A woman whose perspective, cultural background and social position are very different from ours and still, we recognize the struggle. We recognize the expectations and frustration and that's where we find a common ground as women, independent of class, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Our own definition of contemporary feminism couldn't be more accurate without Chimamanda's arguments, so we reached out to her and asked to make her words, our words too. The first edition of our feminist calendar is done through typographic experimentation and uses Chimamanda's quotes only.
FEMINISM IS NOT A DIRTY WORD
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an award-winning Nigerian novelist and one of the most celebrated African authors. She has become a universal voice for the contemporary feminism. Her 2012 TEDx talk, We should all be feminists and the resulting book offers a unique definition of feminism. The issue explores what it means to be a woman now and why we still need feminism.
We are Elisabete Gomes & Rita Matos. We're graphic designers and co-workers. Having spent some time in a constant exchange of ideas and references, we decided to get our worries out of the chat window and take our part in the public speech. This is the way we felt inspired to do so.
Unapologetic is available on sale with worldwide distribution via our online shop. 1€ per sale will be donated to the HeForShe UN association.
